Transparency
Town Hall - Snowmass Village, Colorado
My intent with the sculpture “Transparency” was to create an interactive sculptural installation for the people of Snowmass Village. The public engages with the work physically as seating, and metaphorically and visually as a series of open windows between the Village of Snowmass’s administration and the citizenry that it serves.
To illustrate this concept I created a composition of stone and steel. Three large steel rings, or windows, are strategically placed so that they frame key views of Snowmass Village on the opposite hillside from the Town Hall. They are made from carbon steel and have been allowed to acquire a natural rust finish in keeping with the architecture of the Valley. On the Town Hall side of the rings I’ve placed a composition of 3 stone elements. Visually, they form a loose cluster, or composition, and seem to fan out toward the steel rings. The stones were placed at bench height and serve as seating for the governmental employees and for the public at large. While sitting on the seating stones, one is able to take in the various views created by the careful placement of the windows.
The gently mounded landscaping that surrounds the base of the carbon steel rings are planted with wild flowers from the region.
