Nucleus
Arapahoe Light Rail Station - Greenwood Village, Colorado
My intent for the Arapahoe Light Rail Station was to create a signature sculpture that
honors the uniqueness of the community of Greenwood Village.
I have illustrated this concept with a sculptural installation that looks as if it is made from a unified whole. Actually made from three large marble sculptures the overall outline and form is of a constant when viewed from afar. Each individual piece is set apart from each other and is shaped to look as if they could interlock. As if originating from a central point, the three white modernist forms flare outward and upward, honoring the nucleus of the new town center of Greenwood Village. This upward energy also depicts the town’s spectacular rise to prominence from its historical agrarian roots. Set somewhat apart from each other and just to the side of the new mid-level plaza, the sculpture allows and encourages pedestrian interaction. The three interlocking forms are each 6 ft. by 10 ft. tall and when placed together, convey a sense of interdependence.
The flowing white forms are set atop a horizontal foundation layer of buff limestone. This low, horizontal line of color and texture is meant to pay homage to the town’s origins in farming. This idea is enhanced by the creation of a rough finish on all of the sandstone elements that will contrast with the sleek, white forms of the sculptures set above them.
Set in an open, reverse curved pattern, this installation of timeless forms serves as an interactive focal point for the new town center and hopefully evokes a sense of pride in community for the citizens of Greenwood Village for generations to come.
