Interdependence
Bus Transfer Station - Denver, Colorado

My concept for this site was to create an assemblage of four tall, stone spires. While each spire represents one of the four neighborhoods that surrounds the site, together, they create one sculpture that illustrates the interdependence that exists between various communities and cultures.

The four spires of stone, set in an elliptical pattern, all taper and twist inward, toward each other as they ascend. The overall effect of the gently twisting composition leads the viewer around it as each spire twists and leads into the next; thus emphasizing mutual reliance.

The interior graphics are sandblasted into the stone in patterns that look as if they are continuations of the curved lines that are carved into the exterior faces of each stele. The patterns are made from individual handprints that were obtained from selected groups of young people that live in each of the four communities that surround the site. My intent here is to honor the young people that live in these communities and to transfer ownership of the sculpture to them. The hand prints have been placed onto the surface of the stone anonymously; thus creating a sculpture that truly signifies interdependence.
