Genesis
Midway Park - Broomfield, Colorado

My primary goal with the sculpture Genesis was to pay homage to origins of the town of Broomfield Colorado. My secondary goal with this project was to create an artwork that is interactive, or that functioned as seating. By using the image of broom corn or sprouting seeds as a metaphor, I am celebrating the growth and re-generation of crops that offered the town its original start.

To illustrate this concept I have created a bench that consists of two shard-like elements. Both elements are carved from a very hard limestone and look as if they are portions of a husk, or shell. Within the concave surface of each bench there is a carved, elliptical hole. Protruding from the holes are stalks made from painted steel rod. The overall effect is that of two partial husks that are sprouting new life.
