Cherry Creek Bike Path - Denver, Colorado

My intent for the Cherry Creek Trail site was to create a sculptural composition that depicts an imaginary, visual segment of the river. It looks as if there is a stylized tree that is being undercut, and there for leaning into, the river. The site is a quite oasis that lies within the City of Denver and the sculpture beckons the visitor with its seat/river of stone.

To illustrate this concept I have created a sculpture made from carved limestone, stainless steel and rusted carbon steel. The water, or river element was carved from a pale blue, dolomitic limestone. This was created so that it sits at the same height of a bench and its top was carved to simulate a subtle wave pattern. The sides of the river element are treated with a heavy texture to set off the highly polished top and to emphasize the concept of the work being a cut-away section of the river environment.

Nestled within the "bend" in the river is a rusted steel element that alludes to a tree that is slowly giving way to the constant current of the river. At 15' in height, the modernist tree element is made from 5 rods and is listing toward the river at approximately 10 degrees. Positioned toward the top of the abstract tree is a nest seemingly constructed by an opportunistic bird. The nest is made from stainless steel to visually set itself off from the leaning, rusted elements and is meant to evoke thoughts of the birdlife that can regularly be seen along the river.

The location of the composition is just across form a waterfall area. The site is the perfect place for the hiker or biker to stop and contemplate the beauty of the river.
